Like he says adjust the dampening material accordingly or replace it if needed. There needs to be a proper good electrical connection that's reliable to get the proper midrange and treble out of these great speakers. I've posted this before that the the L pad's and dampening material are most likely the main causes for poor sound followed by the caps being out of spec, you can't judge a pad's performance just because it has no static or turns freely and what I can't emphasize enough on these an other dlk speakers is that all drivers woofers/mids an Tweeter's are all wired in running through these pad's. I'm in 100% agreement with automojo that on most model's where there performance is poor in sound quality it's most likely do to the dampening material being bad n or disintegrating to dust and thee L Pads that are no longer in spec and maybe down a dp or 2 in output from very poor condition and not connecting properly. Those speaker's sounding flat muddy an or boomy an muffled are most likely very tired 30/35yr. I would just interject that IMHO I feel those who feel there dlk speaker's are sounding just like a mid-hif speaker is because they are No longer in proper factory form/specfcations. Hi MJB1959 thanks for posting, I totally Understand why you an other's may call dlk's mid-hifi speaker's, everyone has there own perspective on how they sound and that's ok. They have some great potential with a little thoughtful work. Madisound has 50 watters $10 ea that work fine. IMHO they provide a very inexpensive "base" for some upgrades and tweeks and ultimately lead to some very impressive sound IMHO.Ī recap seems mandatory IMHO as well as checking the pots-some may seem fine-even when you rotate them, but the tweeter output is down a db or 2. Like the CTS-just more detail/air and higher response. The dome tweeters I used integrate very well with the stock drivers, and have a nice flat response with no peaks. The mid bass/bass has gone from good to fairly outstanding IMHO. The 1 1/2's-I dumped the old stuffing and added appox 1.7 lbs of mixed damping to them. I added a foam sheet behind the woofers in the 2's with very good success. Mixing types of damping material seems to work very well on these speakers. The 1 1/2's and 2's need a bit more damping then stock. It also helps point out the need for damping adjustment on the woofer. The imaging is now substantially cleaned up, and the sound stage has widened considerably-they don't sound like a box so much anymore. ![]() I also did this on the 2's-got rid of the metal/screen on the Prime module and cut a sheet of felt the same size. I currently drive them with a H/K PA2400-plenty of clean, non colored power.Īnother trick I found was adding a felt ring (actually a rectangle that extends up and down) around the dome tweeters. The 2's play much louder and can handle more power then the 1 1/2's. Never liked the 3's, never heard the 4's-but with that tweeter I bet they sound outstanding.īy they way they are amp sensitive-drive them with a vintage midfi amp, and that's the sound you will get.ĭrive them with a cleaner amp-and you would be surprised. Some like the CTS tweeter-but IMHO the 1 1/2's and 2's deserve better. While I agree they aren't AMT'3s, they are certainly better then midfi, if your willing to do some upgrades-the bass mid bass/lower mids are excellent IMHO. The main problem IMHO is with the tweeter-put a decent dome tweeter (have had great luck with the Vifa 4ohm on the 1 1/2's and Goldwood GT350 on the 2's-less then $20ea), recap and adjust the damping and your good to go. Have a pair of early 1 1/2's and a new acquired set of 2's.
